After a day in Aukland, we road tripped down to Lake Taupo, a beautiful area with a small town feel in the middle of the North Island. We stayed there two nights, using it as a spring board to the black water rafting (this was a bad idea – it’s farther away than we realized!).
This town was full of good food and friendly people. There is a really neat lake into which hot springs flow, so you can go and sit in whichever temperature of water you feel most comfortable in.
On the same river is Huka Falls, a waterfall that has been caused over time by the slow erosion of the softer minerals at the base of the river. This river provides one eighth of the energy for the entire country!
